Giants Fire Brian Daboll After Four Years of Ups and Downs

The New York Giants have officially parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll, ending a four-year stretch filled with early excitement but constant disappointment. The decision came after the team’s fourth straight loss — a 27–24 collapse against the Chicago Bears, where the Giants blew a 10-point lead in the second half. According to multiple reports, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will take over as interim head coach.
Daboll’s firing didn’t come as a surprise. Rumors had been spreading for weeks that Giants owner John Mara was ready to move on after the team’s heartbreaking Week 7 loss to the Denver Broncos, when New York let an 18-point lead slip away in the final quarter. Mara reportedly wanted to act sooner but waited until halfway through the 2025 season to make the call.
Daboll, 50, ends his Giants tenure with a record of 20-40-1, including this season’s disappointing 2-8 start.
From Hope to Frustration
When Daboll first arrived in 2022, he was viewed as a savior. Coming off his success as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator — where he helped quarterback Josh Allen become a star — many believed he would bring the same magic to New York. His first season seemed to prove them right: the Giants finished 9-7-1, reached the playoffs, and even upset the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round.
But things quickly changed. In 2023, injuries and poor offensive play led to a 6-11 record. By 2024, the team completely fell apart, ending the season at 3-14. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones struggled, then was released late in the year after reportedly asking to leave. Despite all that, ownership decided to give Daboll another shot for 2025, hoping a new quarterback would spark improvement.
The Final Season Falls Apart
During the offseason, the Giants drafted rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, a talented player out of Ole Miss who Daboll personally pushed for. There were flashes of hope, including a Week 6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, but the offense couldn’t stay consistent. Dart suffered multiple injuries, the defense collapsed late in games, and frustration grew both inside the locker room and among fans.
The Giants’ 2-8 record and lack of progress made it clear that change was coming. After blowing yet another lead against the Bears, the front office decided it was time to move on.
Another Chapter in Giants Coaching Chaos
Daboll’s firing marks the fourth head coach the Giants have dismissed in just eight years. Since Tom Coughlin left in 2015, the team has cycled through Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge, and now Brian Daboll — none lasting more than a few seasons. Together, they’ve combined for only two winning years. The constant turnover has left the franchise struggling to find long-term stability and direction.
My Take: The Giants Need a Real Reset
The Giants’ problem isn’t just about one coach — it’s about the whole system. Every few years, they bring in someone new and promise change, but nothing really improves. Daboll had talent on the roster, but injuries, bad play-calling, and weak decision-making held the team back.
Now, with yet another rebuild ahead, the Giants need to stop recycling coaches and start building a real foundation. The team should focus on developing young players, finding an identity, and giving the next coach time to create something lasting. Giants fans deserve more than another short-lived experiment — they deserve a plan that actually works.
